Abstract This theses is a case study that attempts to analyze and link the personality orientation of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi with his decision to deploy Japan's Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) in Iraq in 2003 despite strong opposition from inside Japan. Using Margaret Hermann's theory on personality and foreign policy behavior, this study has established the general orientation of Koizumi in foreign affairs through the operationalization of the framework. Through the thesis objectives, the following conclusions had been drawn: Japan underwent many changes in its society particularly in the area of defense where the state's military budget was reduced and its Constitution was revised. With massive demilitarization, Japan actively collaborated with the international community through monetary contributions until it was pressured to send personnel that will help in the different peacekeeping missions sanctioned by the United Nations. In 2003 however, the Prime Minister has decided to send troops in Iraq despite the fact that the decision has faced strong public opposition in Japan. Secondly, through the coding of his selected interview responses as suggested by the framework in order to determine his six specific personal characteristics, it was found out that the Junichiro Koizumi as the head of one of the world's largest economy has a participatory orientation in foreign affairs. Through this orientation, his specific foreign policy behaviors were determined and they were eventually connected with the deployment of the troops in Iraq in 2003.
