ABSTRACT:  Simple recognition and appreciation could boost self-esteem and confidence and strengthen dedication towards work. Awards as forms of recognition and appreciation could also affect the same. In order to determine and verify these effects of awards on the subjects involved in the study, the researchers conducted a case study of KBP Golden Dove Awards. It determined the help of media awards particularly the KBP Golden Dove Awards in improving the quality of TV programming by serving as an incentive mechanism for quality of TV programming. It aimed to 1.) discuss the profile of the Philippine TV industry, 2.) present the profile of the KBP, 3.) discuss the profile of the KBP Golden Dove Awards and the criteria particularly in the following categories: best TV Station, Best News Program, best Public Affairs program and Best Children's Program, 5.) determine and discuss the perception of the program planners and producers on meeting the criteria set by the KBP Golden Dove Awards, and 6.) find out the effects of the KBP Golden Dove Awards as perceived by program planners and producers. The study used the exploratory research design. The researchers interviewed key actors behind the award-winning stations and programs such as segment producers, researchers, program directors, etc. determining their perceptions on meeting the criteria set by the KBP Golden Dove Awards; first five years from 1990-1994. The study was limited to four categories namely, best TV Station, Best News Program, best Public Affairs program and Best Children's Program. The major findings of the study were summarized below: 1. There are 137 TV stations operating nationwide, most of which are relay stations, originating stations and affiliate stations connected to the 5 major TV networks; ABS-CBN channel 2, PTV-4, ABC-5, GMA-7, RPN-9 and IBC-13. 2. Over the years the Philippine TV has developed from foreign-produced programs that are bought and aired locally to locally-produced and locally-aired programs. The growing number of public affairs program that features society and create awareness on the social issues and problems was added to the existing entertainment-education programs. 3. The Best Children's Program category award was separated from KBP Golden Dove Awards and merged with UNICEP that created the KBP_UNICEF Alay sa Kabataan Awards. 4. The objectives and the criteria of both the KBP and the KBP Golden Dove Awards do not change over the years. 5. The key informants were not aware of the criteria of the awards. 6. Awards had no physical effects on the budget, ad revenues, ratings, etc., but rather effects emotions. Awards motivated the winners to at least maintain if not improve their programs. The awards has also motivated intervenors to the consistency of former through the feelings of frustrations that made them investigate and become aware of the incompetency of their programs. The researchers concluded that KBP Golden Awards indirectly helped improve TV programming by serving as an incentive mechanism. It should however, consider at least three programs episodes as basis and should not limit the nominations to one program in a category per station. The criteria should be clearly and simply stated, specific and time-bound. It should be widely disseminated through proper channels to those who are consistent participants and those who are interested and feel that their programs can qualify for nomination.
