Challenging characters : learning to reach inward and outward from characters who face oppression

The article offers the author's insights on her experience of teaching English literature in middle school education. The author says that she let her students analyze characters facing oppression from Anne Frank's play "The Diary of Anne Frank" and short story "Am I Blue?." She adds that character models rely on both internal strength and external community.
