Feedback : part of a system

The article discusses feedback in education, with particular focus given to the adaptation of the concept of feedback from engineering to education and the complexities of effects of feedback on student learning. The assertion that feedback should function as part of a system supporting optimal conditions for learning is examined, and unintended consequences of feedback including exerting less effort, abandoning goals, and reducing aspiration are touched on. Advice for providing effective feedback is also presented.
